Choosing a School in Newcastle
Newcastle upon Tyne has no grammar schools, so its state secondary schools do not select by ability. The Royal Grammar School is independent and is not on this map. Gosforth, north of the centre, has a three-tier system: first schools for ages 3 to 9, middle schools for 9 to 13, and Gosforth Academy for 13 to 18. The rest of the city uses primary schools to 11 and secondary schools from 11. Parents apply for Reception and Year 7 places through their home council; for most addresses on this map that is Newcastle City Council.
In Newcastle upon Tyne, the average primary school had 65% of pupils meeting the expected standard in reading, writing and maths at KS2 (England: 63%), and the average secondary had 43% of pupils getting grade 5 or above in English and maths at GCSE (England: 46%).

How Are Averages Calculated?
When you open a school, its results show a comparison such as "+12% vs avg". The average is the mean of the figures for every English state school in our data that reports that measure, each school counted once. For primary schools (14,923 with KS2 results), the average share of pupils meeting the expected standard in reading, writing and maths is 63%, with average scaled scores of 105.6 in reading and 104.6 in maths. For secondary schools (3,274 with GCSE results), the average share of pupils getting grade 5 or above in English and maths is 46%, grade 4 or above 65%, and the average Attainment 8 score is 46.6. Because each school counts once whatever its size, these are school averages, not the share of all pupils in England.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I find schools near my address in Newcastle?
Enter your postcode in the search box above. The map will show state primary and secondary schools (not special or independent schools) within your chosen radius, with their latest Ofsted inspection and distance from your location.
What Ofsted ratings do Newcastle schools have?
Click any school on the map to see its latest Ofsted inspection in our data and its exam results, with a link to its Ofsted reports. Older inspections show an overall grade from Outstanding to Inadequate; inspections from September 2024 show grades for each area instead. Our Ofsted data covers inspections up to September 2025, so a school inspected since then still shows its earlier result, and the report cards Ofsted has published since November 2025 are not included yet. The link to its Ofsted reports always has the latest.
